Microsoft's support for Windows 7 officially ended in January 2020, more than a year ago. Users of Windows shouldn't have been surprised by the conclusion: When Windows 7 was released in October 2009, Microsoft guaranteed ten years of product support before moving its focus to other technologies.
Many computer users faced a choice when Microsoft ceased supporting Windows 7: stay on Windows 7 or switch to Windows 10. If you're one of these people who needs to update, you should know that you have a few options.
There are a few procedures to follow whether you download Windows 10 or install it from a USB drive. You may quickly upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 if you follow the appropriate steps.
Purchasing a Windows 10 license is the first step in this process. Because Windows 7 customers are no longer eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 10, you'll have to purchase a Windows 10 product key from Microsoft or another authorized retailer. If you satisfy the conditions, you can also try to get Windows 10 for free.
At the moment, you can purchase Windows 10 Professional for $200 through the Microsoft Store. At $140, Windows 10 Home is also a good deal. This is a good choice if you're on a budget and don't need features like Windows Sandbox or Bitlocker.
If you decide to purchase Windows 10 through Microsoft, you'll have two alternatives. You can either download the OS as an ISO file or use a USB drive to install it. If you choose the USB option, a copy of Windows 10 will be mailed to your home. A USB drive is a great option if your internet connection isn't strong enough to handle the 4GB download.
Meanwhile, using the download option, you can build installation media on a CD or USB to fully erase your hard drive, perform a clean install, and upgrade to Windows 10. Alternatively, you can mount the ISO file by double-clicking it and then opening the Setup.exe file in the folder.
You'll be able to change your BIOS settings to boot from the installer once the media has been prepared. Then, step by step, follow its instructions. You'll almost certainly receive a product key in an email regardless of how you purchase. Continue to the following step if you only want to upgrade your existing Windows 7 installation rather than erasing it. It's a lot easier and more foolproof if you do it this way.
The Windows 10 Media Creation Tool is the most straightforward way to upgrade to Windows 10. Alternatively, if you purchased a Windows 10 USB stick, open it in Windows Explorer and double-click the Setup.exe file. In both circumstances, you should notice an option to Upgrade this PC Now whenever the window is open.
Select that option and follow the on-screen instructions. You'd need to download Windows 10 first if you downloaded the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool from Microsoft's website. There will be no wait if you use the USB.
You'll see a few prompts in either case. One prompt will alert you to any problematic apps or services that may cause Windows 10 to malfunction. It is up to you to deal with these problems. First, you'll need to enter the product key Microsoft emailed to you. However, some users claim they didn't have to. If the key isn't automatically extracted from your Windows 7 computer, you'll have to type it in most of the time.
You can now wait for your PC to upgrade after you've entered the product key. Of course, it would help if you didn't have to wait more than an hour for Microsoft to finish an update, but the age of your PC and the speed of your processor are determining factors in upgrade time.
After the upgrade is complete, go to Windows 10's Device Manager to double-check that the OS recognizes the hardware correctly. You may access Device Manager by performing a single right-click on the Windows icon and selecting it. Keep a lookout for yellow exclamation points as you go through the Device Manager lists.
Right-click on the yellow exclamation marks and select Update Driver from the drop-down menu to update the driver. Then, after searching the Internet for the most suited driver, Windows will install it. If you notice too many missing drivers, your PC may not be eligible for the Windows 10 update. In such a situation, one of the greatest laptops or desktop computers on the market may be in order.
