Duplicate files on Windows 11 predominantly occupy a large space unnecessarily and usually undermine the system’s performance as well, thereby eventually calling for a cleanup process to be executed. Friends, I removed duplicate files in Windows 11 recently by using the File Explorer option.
This can also be done either by using the application of third-party software or executing a few commands on the Command Prompt screen. Well, whatever the cleaning option you may resort to; first you need to find the duplicate files and then remove duplicate files in Windows 11 by running the cleanup application using any of the three modes namely the File Explorer, the Command Prompt, or a Third Party Software application.
So here is a quick walkthrough as to how to find and remove duplicate files in Windows 11.
Before you remove duplicate files in Windows 11 it is obvious for you to find the duplicate files in Windows 11 first.
Simply follow the process given underneath to find duplicate files in Windows 11.
Step 1 - Press the Windows button along with the letter “E” to open the File Explorer followed by navigating the folder where you wish to find duplicate files.
Step 2 - On the Command Bar click on the Sort option and choose the Name option thereafter.
Step 3 - As a consequence of the execution of the above steps, the files with Copy suffix will get serially ordered.
Step 1 - Click on the View option after going to the folder where you want to find the duplicate files. Then choose the Details option from the list of options displayed thereafter.
Step 2 - The files will get displayed with all relevant details including the attributes. As and when all the files get displayed, manually choose the duplicate ones. For convenience, you may opt to get the files sorted in accordance with the Name
Step 1 - After sorting the duplicate files under Name mode and switching further to the Details view, start selecting them separately and clicking on the Command Bar. Alternatively, you can press the Delete button from the keyboard.
Step 2 - You can also select the files by selecting all the files jointly using the CTRL keys and hitting the Delete button all at once.
Step 3 - Now give your confirmation by clicking the Yes button.
This process happens to be a safe option as you exercise this option at a discrete level thereby mitigating the risk of deleting some critical files.
But if you are comfortable executing different commands, then you may choose to go with the Command Prompt option in a bid to delete the duplicate files.
Step 1 - Navigate to find the folder you wish to delete the duplicate files from. Then right-click on it and choose the “Copy as Path” from the list that gets displayed.
Step 2 - After you have found the duplicate files, press the Windows key with the letter “S” together to open the Search menu.
Step 3 - In the text box type in Windows Terminal followed by selecting “Run as Administrator” from the context menu.
Step 4 - A pop-up box with the heading User Access Control will get opened, find the Yes button at the bottom-most place of this box.
Step 5 - Click on the button that resembles a Downward Facing Arrow located at the top. From the list of options that get displayed, select Command Prompt. You can also press CTRL+SHIFT+2 buttons simultaneously in order to launch the Command Prompt screen.
Step 6 - Now type cd /d "folder path" and insert the real path of the file in double inverted commas and press the Enter button.
Step 7 - Again type the command del "* - Copy.png" followed by replacing the complete path of the files to be deleted and subsequently pressing the Enter button.
If you search Google you will definitely find a number of software or applications that are capable of removing duplicate files in Windows 11. But we recommend you install Easy Duplicate Finder to scan for and delete all the duplicate files in Windows 11.
